This article describes this new compressor technology and its first use in an ARI-certified chiller design.THE BEARINGSTraditional centrifugal compressors use roller bearings and hydrodynamic bearings, both of which consume power and require oil and a lubrication system. Recently, ceramic roller bearings, which avoid issues related to oil and reduce power yardmachinechippershredder consumption, were introduced to the HVAC industry. The lubrication of these bearings is provided by the refrigerant itself. (1)Magnetic-bearing technology is significantly different. A digitally controlled magnetic-bearing system, consisting of both permanent magnets and electromagnets, replaces conventional lubricated bearings. The frictionless compressor shaft is the compressor''s only moving component. It rotates on a levitated magnetic cushion (Figure 1). Magnetic bearings--two radial and one axial--hold the shaft in position (Figure 2).

Several years ago I found that cramming a large table into a small room greatly increased the size of the room. The table invited conversation, yardmachinechippershredder ideas, and laughter much more easily than I did. It was a Wednesday in September of 1991 when friends and I first wrestled a wooden spool top up the stairs, oblivious in our excitement to its splinters and rusted nails. By nightfall we had calmed it with offerings of spilled candle wax and red wine. By ten there had begun what came to be known as the Utopia Round Table Meetings.These meetings, more or less centered on figuring out what the idea of utopia was all about, were the best discussions I ever had at Harvard. They would begin tennish every Wednesday and last to the wee hours of the morning. We were not beyond including course material or reading out loud from books, nor were we beyond moaning about relationships gone sour, or abandoning words altogether to play chess. The conversations were intense and spectacular, charged with the unspoken understanding that the round-table meetings themselves were a kind of utopia. Every week we tossed around notions of community and tradition, stability and sterility, free will and free love. Toward the end of the year the meetings felt as if they were rolling toward some kind of climax. Very late one night, with the sun just peeking through the Boston skyscrapers, we put all differences yardmachinechippershredder aside and promised to meet in Baja (why Baja, I don''t know) after we had graduated. Amid daring speeches and solemn oaths we signed our names on the wall committing ourselves to launching the real thing--the real Utopia--no matter who we became in the between years.

[FIGURE 8 OMITTED]To give the water team more breathing room, the 3T group suggested that the water team divide the official start of the test into two components: (1) the BWP and the reverse osmosis and (2) the reverse osmosis and the other two subsystems (AES and PPS). In the iWRS system, the pivotal yardmachinechippershredder subsystem is the reverse osmosis. This yardmachinechippershredder system receives BWP effluent, processes it, and provides yardmachinechippershredder product yardmachinechippershredder water for the two downstream systems. In effect, the BWP is independent of the downstream systems, so it could conceivably be started early when the downstream systems were still being built. Because of the modularity of 3T, the initial iWRS could consist of the first yardmachinechippershredder two subsystems, with the output going to drain while the inoculation yardmachinechippershredder proceeded, and the second iWRS could include all four subsystems. In this manner, the water team started the test with only the first two subsystems yardmachinechippershredder in April 2000 and brought the other two systems online in December 2000 in time to make a January 2001 full start.
